GIS DEVELOPER / ANALYST
REPORTS TO: GIS Web Developer
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Foundation Center is looking for a GIS developer/analyst to join our team in our New York City office. The successful applicant will help develop our GIS infrastructure and will help build and maintain several web mapping applications.
- Developing and maintaining GIS web applications, primarily with JavaScript APIs, PHP, misc. geodatabases and GIS servers
- Evaluating and assembling geographic data sets (e.g., gazetteers, world-wide administrative polygons, and indicator data from multiple sources) for use in master geodatabases, in compliance with the best available international standards
- Creating data visualization apps and images for use on the web and in print
- Analyzing and explaining patterns in customer behavior and philanthropic activity in a geographic context
- Creating/modifying/running scripts for geoprocessing and data cleaning/organizing
- Geocoding/geo-tagging data related to foundation grants and international development
- Creating templates for rapid-response mapping and data visualization applications
- Provide backup support for existing GIS applications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: :
- Degree in Geography, Computer Science, or related field
- 2+ years of experience in building web and/or GIS applications
- Experience building web applications with open source and/or commercial GIS software libraries/packages, such as OpenLayers, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, GeoServer, ESRI (JS API, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online), R (e.g. spatstat), Microsoft SQL Server Spatial, KML, etc.
- Demonstrated understanding of cartography & data visualization principles
- Familiarity with JavaScript utility and charting libraries, like jQuery (or Dojo, Ext, etc.), Highcharts, D3, Google charts, etc.
- Understanding of GIS and statistical methods, particularly spatial statistics
- Web programming and database experience, particularly with JavaScript, PHP, Python, XML, HTML, & CSS. Databases include MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and/or MySQL. Applicable expertise in other languages (e.g., ASP/C#) & databases (e.g., Oracle) would also be beneficial.
- Understanding of web architecture, protocols, and APIs
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: :
- M.A. or M.S. Geography, Computer Science, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in building web and/or GIS applications
- Extensive experience building web applications with both open source and commercial GIS software libraries/packages.
- Expertise in using and customizing implementations of JavaScript libraries, like OpenLayers, jQuery (or Dojo, Ext, etc.), Highcharts, and D3
- Demonstrated experience with spatial statistics in an academic or professional environment
- Experience building and consuming APIs
- Deep interest in issues related to philanthropy and international development
