Arts Month Sustaining Your Arts Organization Through Advocacy

Learn how to bolster your organization's case for funding through arts promotion and advocacy.

You CAN influence politicians' decisions about the arts! Come find out how to wield your power and successfully advocate for arts funding and increase awareness of the impact of the arts and culture on communities.

Topics will include:

  • Why advocacy is important for culture and arts nonprofits at the legislative and community levels
  • Tips for strategic and effective advocacy
  • Creating advocacy action plans
Adam Natale, director of membership and program development at Fractured Atlas, and Jan Selman, executive director of the Arts Leadership League of Georgia (ALL-GA), will discuss how advocacy can sustain funding for the arts.

Presenters:

Adam Natale, Director of Membership and Program Development With Fractured Atlas
Adam has created innovative audience development, online education, and arts insurance programs, formed partnerships with over 60 arts organizations, presented at multiple national conferences, and has helped the organization grow immensely, with over 4,000 artists joining in the past year. A graduate of American University with a degree in Directing for Theatre & Film, he is a freelance director, serves on the board of directors for Red Bull Theater, and is a member and the immediate past chair of Americans for the Arts' Emerging Leader Council. Formerly, he served the Theater & Musical Theater disciplines at the National Endowment for the Arts and worked as an associate producer with the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

Jan Selman, Executive Director of the Arts Leadership League of Georgia (ALL-GA)
Jan has dedicated her life’s work to strengthening the arts community in Georgia and the Southeast. In addition to leading ALL-GA, she serves on the boards of directors of the Southern Arts Federation, the Cultural Tourism Board of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau and on the advisory board of the Georgia Shakespeare Festival. Jan’s arts advocacy career has included tenures as chairman of the Georgia Council for the Arts and executive director of the DeKalb Council for the Arts. Jan also served as legislative vice president of Georgia Citizens for the Arts, which suspended operations in 2003. Her work on behalf of the arts has earned her an Abby Award from the Metropolitan Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and a Mary Clark Community Arts Award. As executive director of ALL-GA, Jan serves as the state advocacy chair for Americans for the Arts.
