Legal Issues in an Economic Downturn

Atlanta
Presented in collaboration with Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta

Explore the potential legal pitfalls faced by nonprofits during an economic downturn.

This event is part of our Surviving Economic Uncertainty series.

Free
120 minutes

With the bad economy comes new challenges to many nonprofit organizations. Sharp decreases in government funding and private donations mean that nonprofits must find ways to trim their budgets and increase revenue. Some may question their very survival. This workshop will provide you with the information you need to weigh your options and make sure that you are taking measures that will ultimately help, rather than harm, the organization.

Presenters will discuss:

  • Layoffs, furloughs and other alternatives to workforce reductions
  • Ways to modify contractual obligations and renegotiate leases
  • The responsibilities and duties of your board of directors
  • Ways to renegotiate outstanding debt
  • The tax implications of creative fundraising efforts
  • The possibility of bankruptcy or dissolution
  • Mergers and strategic alliances with other nonprofits
