90 minutes

Ellen McCarty, Certified Grants Specialist, will explain the ins and outs of government funding for those interested in learning how to identify, research, and apply for government grants. Topics covered will include:

  • How to determine if a government grant is right for your organization
  • How to research and identify the appropriate government grant
  • Differences between a government grant and a proposal for a private funder
  • After the grant award – the importance of grant management and monitoring

Ellen McCarty has twenty years of executive level experience in the government and nonprofit sectors. For the past 14 years, she has served as the Executive Director of a nonprofit serving abused and at-risk children and youth in Cobb County; the Executive Director of an Atlanta-based nonprofit serving homeless men, women, and children infected and/or affected with HIV/AIDS; and the President and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Georgia and Alabama.

Ms. McCarty is a Certified Grants Specialist and a Certified Grant Reviewer for local, state, and federal agencies. She has an extensive background in the identification of funding sources, grant/proposal development, and grant management for government and private donors. Examples of government grants she has received funding for include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and the U.S. Department of Justice. The organizations she has led have been recognized at the local, state, and national level for client programs and services as well as their consistently high regulatory compliance rating. Ms. McCarty designed and taught a grant-writing workshop for nonprofits and local governments for ten years and served as a guest instructor for the Georgia Center for Nonprofits. Ms. McCarty has additional expertise in the procurement of private funding for annual fund drives, special events, and capital campaigns. She has also worked with nonprofits to achieve greater financial stability by conducting grant research focused on the identification of new funding sources.
