Grantmakers Funding Elementary/Secondary
School Reform

About the Map

Which grantmaking organizations are active in the field of elementary/secondary school reform? The Foundation Center has created this map to help education funders align their work with colleague organizations that are addressing education reform issues on the national, regional, state, and local levels.

The map shows the distribution by location of grantmakers that have elementary/secondary school reform among their fields of interest and/or gave a grant to a recipient whose institution type has been classified as "elementary/secondary school reform," based on the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) institutional codes used by the Foundation Center's Grants Classification System.

Included are private and community foundations, corporate grantmakers, public foundations, and other charities that maintain grantmaking programs. You can drill down to see grantmaker snapshots that provide key basic information — such as contact information, financial data, fields of interests, and 990s for multiple years — drawn from Foundation Directory Online for each grantmaker in our database with an interest in this area.

How to Use the Map

The default map view shows the total distribution (number) of all grantmakers in the U.S. that meet the criteria for inclusion in this map, as outlined above. You can roll your mouse over each state to see the distribution of grantmakers located in each state. A corresponding table below the map lists state locations and the number of grantmakers in each state with the default showing the state with the highest proportion of grantmakers active in this field. This list can be resorted to display states in alphabetical order by clicking on the "Location" column name. Similarly, you can click on the "Grantmaker Count" column name on the right to resort the number from the high-low default to low-high (descending vs. ascending).

Change Map View by Grantmaker Type
By clicking the radio buttons on the top left of the U.S. map screen, you can change the default "All" map view to display grantmakers based on their type, as follows: community foundation, company-sponsored foundation, corporate giving program, independent foundation, operating foundation, or (grantmaking) public charity. This feature will be especially helpful to national funders that wish to connect with community foundations working locally to help schools and other educational institutions leverage stimulus dollars.

View Grantmakers by Geographic Location
Click on a state to see the distribution of grantmakers by the county in which they are located. You can change the default county selection to view a list of grantmakers by city, ZIP code, or congressional district by clicking on the geographic display radio buttons in the left hand column. Click on the grantmaker name in the results list to see basic information about that grantmaker.

A Note About Grantmaker Fields of Interest

Grantmaker fields of interest, or subject categories, are assigned by Foundation Center staff for all grantmakers that identify specific giving priorities in their public documents (e.g., annual reports, mission statements, press releases, etc.) or through direct contact with the Foundation Center, including survey responses, e-mails, and telephone calls. In addition, Foundation Center staff assign subject categories for all other grantmakers whose annual total giving averages $20,000 or more, based on an analysis of their giving patterns over the latest few years. A subject term is assigned if a grantmaker consistently disburses 10 percent or more of its total giving to benefit a particular field or subject area, such as employment, community development, or housing. Self-reported grantmaker information supercedes all other sources of data. Grantmakers have an opportunity to update or revise their Foundation Center entry and assigned subject terms on a regular basis.
