For this edition of Philanthropy Chat, Janet Camarena, director of the Foundation Center-San Francisco, interviewed Bill Somerville, founder and executive director of the Philanthropic Ventures Foundation (PVF).
PVF administers the giving for thousands of donors and specializes in responsive approaches to grantmaking. Bill is also the author of a new book Grassroots Philanthropy: Field Notes of a Maverick Grantmaker (read a review). Bill talks a bit about his book, offers advice for other philanthropists, and shares what he has learned from his years of experience in the field.

Bill Somerville's career as a grantmaker spans 48 years in nonprofit work, including 17 years as executive director of the Peninsula Community Foundation (now known as the Silicon Valley Community Foundation), before founding PVF in 1991.
Bill is nationally recognized as an expert on creative grantmaking, having consulted at more than 350 community foundations in the United States, Canada and abroad on effective operations and grantmaking.
