International Grantmaking Update

October 2006

This report, prepared by the Foundation Center in cooperation with the Council on Foundations, presents a brief update of key trends through 2005 and discusses the current outlook for giving. The study provides estimates of overall giving by private and community foundations; and an analysis of patterns of giving from 2002 to 2004 based on a sample of larger U.S. foundations.

Estimated giving by U.S. foundations for international purposes reached a record $3.8 billion in 2005, according to International Grantmaking Update, released by the Foundation Center in cooperation with the Council on Foundations. This increase represented a nearly 12 percent inflation-adjusted gain over 2002—far surpassing the 2 percent rise in overall giving in the same period.

International Grantmaking III

October 2004

Prepared in cooperation with the Council on Foundations as an update to the 2000 International Grantmaking II study, this report examines perspectives on the post-9/11 funding climate and the current outlook for the field based on a 2004 survey of more than 60 leading U.S. international grantmakers.

It also documents trends in international giving based on the grants of over 600 larger U.S. foundations. In particular, the study analyzes shifts in giving priorities, countries/regions targeted for support, and the impact of new large funders.
