
Is there a difference between the terms "nonprofit" and "not-for-profit?"
Although most of the time, for most people, there is no distinction between the terms "nonprofit" and "not-for-profit," there are subtle distinctions that are recognized by nonprofit, legal, academic, and other communities. Though the words can be used differently by different groups, the simplest way to distinguish between the two terms is to think of the term "not-for-profit" as an activity, such as a reading a book. The term "nonprofit" refers to an organization that is not intended to make a profit, say for instance, an adult literacy group.
