Advanced FC Search

Searching the Grants File

The Grants file in FC Search lets you view the recent funding history of the larger foundations. It contains approximately 320,000 grants (of $10,000 or more) awarded by the largest U.S. foundations. A foundation's grants for multiple years may be included to help show funding patterns. You have a greater ability to pinpoint specific subjects in the grants database because the subject index is more detailed than the Fields of Interest index in the Grantmaker file. Also, the Text Search field can be a very powerful tool, as you can pick up key words in the descriptions of grant awards, which are available in more than 80% of the records.

All grant records in the Grants file are linked to the record of a foundation in the Grantmaker file. When you are viewing a grant record in the Grants file, you can immediately link to the associated foundation description in the Grantmaker file by clicking on the Grantmaker icon on the toolbar.

Note: The indexed Grants file does not include the selected grants, which are often part of the records of larger grantmakers.

The Advanced Grants Searching mode has 12 available search fields. The 5 default fields displayed when you first enter the search screen are:
  • Recipient Name
  • Recipient State/Country
  • Grantmaker Name
  • Subjects
  • Text Search
Other available search criteria are:
  • Geographic Focus
  • Grant Amount
  • Grantmaker State
  • Recipient City
  • Recipient Type
  • Types of Support
  • Year Authorized
You can choose the fields you want to search by using one or more of the 5 defaults displayed or, to choose among the additional criteria, click on one of the currently displayed field names to open the drop-down list.
