The Affiliation Continuum



Level of Affiliation: Work on your own
Examples: Inventors, Sculptors, Poets, Photographers
 

Level of Affiliation: Form a consortium with other individuals; develop affinity groups; form your own tax-exempt organization
Examples: Self-help groups, Local ecology groups, Sports clubs, Chamber orchestras
 

Level of Affiliation: Find a temporary "in name only" sponsor or umbrella group to serve as a fiscal agent or conduit
Examples: Arts councils, Historical societies, Church groups, Film societies, United funds
 

Level of Affiliation: Make use of a current affiliation to serve as your formal sponsor, or find a new sponsor
Examples: Professional societies, Trade associations, Clubs, Unions, Alumni groups
 

Level of Affiliation: Become an employee of a nonprofit institution
Examples: Universities, Libraries, Hospitals, Museums
