Voices Against Violence
Voices Against Violence (VAV) is an organization established to provide effective intervention and prevention activities in a proactive way, that strategically reduce interpersonal conflict among youth and individuals, to address issue that impact negatively on underserved communities through innovative, grassroots approaches that engage youth and community residents.
The objectives of VAV are:
- Reduce interpersonal conflict
- Mediation and conflict resolution as intervention and prevention strategies
- Increase student academic performance
- Increase parental involvement in strategies to promote healthy youth development
- Aggressively educate youth on guns and gun violence prevention
- Promote economic development and opportunities for underserved communities
VAV offers a free 2-month summer program in the Hilltop community. The summer program decreases youths’ unsupervised time, which may lead to negative activities and behaviors. Structured programming offers cultural exposure, mentoring and life skills, and recreation and physical activity.

VAV also collaborates with YouthWorks to provide
in-school programs at Carrick and Brashear high schools. School activities include tutoring, career exploration, GED instruction, study skills, job shadowing, occupational skills training, and leadership development. All students participating in the program go on to graduate, with a cumulative GPA of 3.39, and enroll in post-secondary education.
