$25,000 to support the expansion of their youth development program which provides academic and emotional support to at-risk Arab-American youth ages 8 to 18. They will enhance college preparation services by hiring a part-time instructor whose responsibilities will include conducting SAT preparation classes for students, and providing counseling and workshops for students and parents on college planning topics such as the financial aid application process.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF HAWTHORNE
Hawthorne, NJ
$35,000 to fund a new Director of Education and Teen Services position responsible for expanded programming for teens including job readiness, college guidance, and personal/leadership development. Programming will be offered in newly renovated space dedicated exclusively to attracting and serving this often overlooked age group. Through this effort they hope to increase their teen membership which is currently around 200 members.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF PATERSON
Paterson, NJ
$40,000 for renewed support of a Director of Education for the Passaic Club who serves as an assistant to the Unit Director. Since the Boys and Girls Club of Paterson took over the management of the Passaic Club in September 2003, the Club has flourished and the attendance levels are returning to peak levels. The Passaic Club will serve 1500 youth aged 5 to 18 this year, and this position is a critical component of serving their educational needs.

CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION - PUBLIC EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
("CEI-PEA")

$50,000 to provide support for the Leadership Training: Focus on Principals Initiative to mentor young and inexperienced principals whose responsibilities are increasing and becoming more complex as a result of wide-ranging re-structuring of the New York City public school system. In exchange for greater autonomy, school leaders will have to exercise greater responsibility in areas that are largely unfamiliar to them. CEI-PEA will focus on fiscal and personnel management, two vital areas in which new principals are most in need of support.

THE EAGLE ACADEMY FOUNDATION
Bronx, NY
$50,000 to support the salary of the Executive Director, responsible for securing financial support to implement the Foundation's program plans for The Eagle Academy for Young Men in the South Bronx. Their strategic partner, One Hundred Black Men, Inc., established the Eagle Academy, a public-private collaborative supported by the New Vision High School Initiative. The Foundation provides funding for the extended day after school program, the mentoring program, and the Saturday Institute for the Eagle Academy which serves young men in grades 9 through 12.

EDUCATIONAL ALLIANCE

$25,000 to support the implementation of a comprehensive College Prep Program which will directly serve 100 eleventh and twelfth graders with an additional 560 teens benefiting from the college bound programming. The program will include SAT prep courses, academic instruction on SAT content, one-on-one counseling, trips to visit colleges and focused workshops on topics such as financial aid and scholarships. Participants will be provided with the knowledge and resources that will help them to make informed and purposeful decisions about their high school and post-secondary school careers.

FRANCISCAN COMMUNITY CENTER
New York, NY
$20,000 to provide salary support for the part-time Youth Education Director position. The Director is responsible for the development, implementation and administration of all academic programs offered at the Center including the Franciscan Tutorial program, Summer Tutorial, and SAT Preparation, and serves as a liaison between the Center and parents, Principals, and Guidance Counselors from the neighborhood. The Center serves Manhattan's Upper West Side community including 2000 youth annually.

MADISON SQUARE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
New York, NY
$35,000 for renewed support of the Explorers Academy, an intensive education initiative serving 350 youth aged 6 to 9. The program delivers supportive educational services to members with the goal of inspiring increased effort on homework assignments, improved attitude toward school and learning, and greater parental involvement. By providing concentrated academic support at an early age, they hope to keep youth on track and promote long-term academic success.

NEW YORK CARES
New York, NY
$50,000 to support a newly created Children's Education Program Manager position to respond to an increased demand for their education programs. This staff person will be a member of a four-person team who will develop, coordinate, and evaluate volunteer projects, which will include Reading and Writing Enrichment, Homework Help, and Computer Skills Tutorials. These programs will serve thousands of disadvantaged children ages 4-16 in schools, shelters, and community centers throughout New York City.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR A BETTER TOMORROW ("OBT")
Brooklyn, NY
$30,000 to provide support to expand the new Adult Literacy Program at their OBT North Site, which currently serves 135 low-income adults, to serve an additional 60 adults. The program provides three ongoing courses to meet the individual needs of the participants: English as a Second Language (ESL); Adult Basic Education (ABE); and Adult Secondary Education/GED Test Preparation. The goals are to enhance the literacy and life skills of participants, and to enable them to gain increased opportunities for employment.

PARTNERSHIP WITH CHILDREN
New York, NY
$45,000 to provide support for a Site Supervisor position at IS 49 in Staten Island where their school-based Open Heart-Open Mind Program was recently implemented. They place teams of professional Social Workers on-site in New York City public elementary and middle schools on a full-time basis to support the social and emotional development of inner city children at multiple risks for academic failure. They perform a vital role in supporting the whole school community, improving school climate, and providing essential full classroom, individual and family, and small group intervention, counseling and support.

THE READING TEAM
New York, NY
$25,000 to provide renewed support the afterschool program which serves fifty children in kindergarten through grade three from local schools in West Harlem. The program runs five days a week during the school year, providing literacy-nurturing instruction and support. The Reading Team is an early intervention program which is dedicated to enabling the young children of West Harlem to become competent and enthusiastic readers, writers, listeners and speakers.

TEACH FOR AMERICA - New York
New York, NY
$50,000 to provide salary support for two Program Directors who are participating in a national Teach For America pilot project that will test whether a lower Program Director to corps member ratio will yield more significant academic gains for their students. Each of the two Program Directors will support 30 corps members rather than the typical load of 50, giving them more time to spend observing corps members and developing new strategies and approaches to address obstacles to student achievement. This year, 1000 corps members are teaching in 300 New York City public schools, reaching some 75,000 students.

URBAN ASSEMBLY
New York, NY
$50,000 to provide support for their new College Planning Office which will provide guidance and counseling start-up functions for their school sites. The Urban Assembly is a non-profit education intermediary that since 1997 has opened 17 academically rigorous, theme-based public high schools in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education and New Visions for Public Schools. They have committed to a college-preparatory model for all of their schools. Through this effort they will provide the college planning offices with customized professional development, college counseling resources, technical support and targeted marketing initiatives. This grant will support the 14 schools in their network which do not have arts themes.

YOUTH COMMUNICATION NEW YORK CENTER
New York, NY
$25,000 capacity building grant to support a new Outreach Director position responsible for ensuring that their publications are used widely and effectively with teens in schools, after school programs and in the child welfare system. They will look at new ways of reaching readers such as streaming audio and/or video on their website, and opportunities to use their archive of stories and lessons to expand readership as well as increase their income from selling these products.
