BANK STREET COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

$25,000 to support 2 part-time learning specialists for Liberty LEADS: The Bank Street Center for Leadership and College Preparation. This after school and summer program serves a heterogeneous group of 300 young people in grades 5 to 12 that includes both students who are achieving and students who are struggling or at risk of dropping out of school. The specialists will train their staff so they have the knowledge and ability to use a variety of instructional strategies to address diverse student learning needs. Liberty LEADS helps students become successful and life-long learners, graduate from high school, and gain admission to postsecondary education and/or an entry-level career.

BRONX PREPARATORY CHARTER SCHOOL
Bronx, NY
$40,000 to provide second-year funding for the Middle School Principal position for this college preparatory charter school in the South Bronx which serves 590 students in grades 5-12. With their growing student population, it was essential to have a person solely focusing on and overseeing the educational program for the middle school grades, and providing professional development to ensure that the teachers and students continue to grow. Bronx Prep's mission is to prepare underserved middle and high school students for further education, civic involvement and lifelong success through a structured, caring environment of high academic expectations.

CHILDREN'S LITERACY INITIATIVE
Philadelphia, PA/Brooklyn, NY
$35,000 to support the implementation of their Early Childhood Literacy Intervention Program in 14 pre-K classrooms at 7 Brooklyn public elementary schools. They will use their Blueprint for Early Literacy pre-kindergarten curriculum and professional development to help teachers address the needs of children with a limited exposure to language and books at home improve their reading readiness. The program provides teachers with strategies to enhance phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary instruction (the areas the National Reading Panel has deemed essential).

FRIENDS OF THE EAST NEW YORK PREP CHARTER SCHOOL
Brooklyn, NY
$35,000 to support a new Dean of Students position for this charter school which serves the severely disadvantaged community of East New York in Brooklyn. The current enrollment is 200 students in grades K-3, and at full capacity the school will serve 450 students in grades K-8. The Dean will create student support teams for 100 of their highest-risk students and families; establish a new afterschool program serving at least 100 students; and oversee the creation of a community resource and service referral directory for families and staff.

FUTURE LEADERS INSTITUTE CHARTER SCHOOL ("FLI")
New York, NY
$40,000 to provide second-year funding for a Math Specialist Instructor to provide additional classroom instruction to a cohort of students in grades 4 and 5. Having the math specialist allows two teachers to simultaneously teach math, increasing the number of struggling students who receive individualized attention. FLI, which serves students in K through 8th grade, just entered its third year as a charter school and its ninth year of operation. It offers an innovative, academically rigorous curriculum, an extended school day, and a learning community where students of all ability levels can meet academic success.

GRACE OUTREACH
Bronx, NY
$25,000 to help launch their new initiative, Achieving College and Training program ("ACT") serving low-income youth and young mothers ages 18 and over in the South Bronx. The program will provide comprehensive support for their students as they move forward with college, training and employment. Grace Outreach provides programs for young women seeking to enhance their academic skills, attend college and secure employment.

HARLEM LINK CHARTER SCHOOL
New York, NY
$25,000 to provide salary support for a new Lower School Dean position serving grades K-2 at their annex, in support of their Active Citizenship Program which teaches children core values, decision-making, critical thinking and Social Studies. This program enables the school to maintain a quality teaching and learning environment that is supportive of children, and creates an atmosphere that makes high achievement possible for all students. Harlem Link Charter School is a K-8 charter school serving the Central Harlem community.

HARLEM RBI
New York, NY
$25,000 for start-up costs for the DREAM Charter School which will open in September 2008 with 100 grades K-1 students and grow to a total of 450 students in grades K-8. The grant will support professional development for teachers and staffing for their extended day/extended year program. The purpose of the school is to provide at-risk East Harlem youth with a high quality primary and middle school education which focuses on achievement in literacy and math. Unique features of the school include an inclusion method of co-teaching teams within each classroom and a Coordinated Health Program. The school has been incubated and supported by its institutional partner, Harlem RBI, a 17-year old youth development organization.

HYDE LEADERSHIP CHARTER SCHOOL
Bronx, NY
$30,000 to support staffing for their new After-School and Saturday Academy program which will offer extra classroom hours for students who are performing below grade level in math, reading and writing. This college preparatory charter school, located in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx, is in its second year of operation with a current enrollment of 335 students in grades K, 1st 6th and 7th. The school will eventually become a K-12 school serving 1,000 students. The Hyde model focuses on character development and family involvement as critical components of a student's growth in preparation for college and fulfillment in life.

NEW YORK CARES
New York, NY
$20,000 to provide continued support of a Children's Education Program Manager who works with a team to develop, coordinate, and evaluate volunteer projects for more than 80 public schools, youth-serving organizations and homeless and transitional shelters throughout NYC. Their education programs include Reading and Writing Enrichment, Homework Help, and Computer Skills Tutorials, as well as new Family Literacy and Team Green Environmental Clubs. They will run 2,550 projects benefiting over 12,000 disadvantaged and low-income children and youth ages 4 to 16, designed to build literacy and academic skills, as well as prepare high school students for college.

NEW YORK CITY OUTWARD BOUND CENTER
New York, NY
$50,000, the first installment of a total $100,000 grant commitment over 2 years, to support a Data & Assessment Manager position to oversee their new data management & evaluation system. This system will give them the ability to access and analyze data around multiple dimensions of school success, and enable them to better assess the effectiveness of their services in driving improvement in student and overall school outcomes. NYC Outward Bound is creating a network of innovative, college preparatory Expeditionary Learning public schools in partnership with the NYC Department of Education.

THE READING TEAM

$25,000 to support a second Reading Specialist for their afterschool program which serves fifty children in grades K-3 from neighborhood schools. The program runs five days a week during the school year, providing literacy-nurturing instruction and support. The Reading Specialist's responsibilities will include creating a Preschool Program curriculum and Literacy Mentoring Training Guide. The Reading Team is an early intervention program which is dedicated to enabling the young children in West Harlem to become competent and enthusiastic readers, writers, listeners and speakers.

SETON HALL UNIVERSITY
South Orange, NJ
$30,000 to support the Newton Street School Project, a turnaround program for this failing pre-K through grade 8 school located in Newark, which is being led by Seton Hall University's Center for Urban Leadership, Renewal and Research. Through a collaborative effort they are providing an alternative governance and instructional approach to the Newton Street School. The grant will support the integral teacher professional development component provided by an educational consulting firm, Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), a nationally recognized expert in school improvement initiatives. This project is being touted as a potential national model for schools that have failed to make annual yearly progress under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation.

SOUTH ASIAN YOUTH ACTION ("SAYA!")
Queens, NY
$25,000 to support new staffing including a part-time Program Associate and two paid tutors to help strengthen their Academic and College Preparation Program. SAYA! has worked over the past 3 years to integrate academics into all of its programs. They now require all the youth they serve to participate in their academic services which include SAT and SHSAT preparation classes, individualized tutoring, Regent's Exam preparation, and college guidance. It is he only organization in New York City providing non-sectarian comprehensive youth development services to South Asian youth, one of the fastest growing low-income minority groups in NYC.

SPONSORS FOR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY ("SEO")

$45,000 to provide salary support for a Program Manager/Faculty staff position responsible for managing a cohort of 60+ high school sophomores enrolled in the SEO Scholars Program. This intensive out-of-school academic enrichment program helps motivated 9th through 12th grade students from NYC public high schools gain admission and succeed at competitive colleges. They have begun to implement a four-year pilot Achievement Gap Initiative to significantly increase time on academic tasks in an effort to improve outcomes for their students.

URBAN EDUCATION EXCHANGE ("UEE")
New York, NY
$75,000 to provide salary support for a new Manager of Web Initiatives position responsible for the development and presentation of program content on their website, creating a user-friendly and marketable platform that will integrate curriculum, professional development and organizational development. UEE fosters academic excellence among disadvantaged children by providing integrated professional development support to high-needs urban schools. Their program is comprised of a research-based curriculum for K-6th grade, customized teacher training, and periodic student assessments and teacher evaluation.
