Foundation Policies

What we support: Applicants must be a 501(c)(3) group and meet the stated areas of interest. We'll review proposals from well-organized start-up groups with realistic budgets and strategies, as well as groups with a longer history. We'll support general operating expenses as well as special projects.
Geographical restrictions: Applicants must be based in the Puget Sound area. Native American projects throughout Washington state may apply.
Grants are not made for: Individuals, scholarships, schools, capital expenses or renovation projects, food or shelter programs (except DV), research or publications, video & web productions, programs with a religious message or proselytizing approach, athletic events or sponsorships.
Average grant size: $1,000 to $,3000. Total annual grants: $32,000.
Proposal Review Trustees may request a site visit to learn more about a program's goals, strategies and constituency. Grantees are asked to submit a brief year-end report at the conclusion of the grant period.
Mail Only We do not accept proposals by fax or e-mail.
Repeat Funding After four grants, a group is asked to wait a full year before reapplying.

Application Procedure

Pre-Application Letter. The first step in applying for a grant is a brief letter of inquiry, not to exceed two pages. (This step is not optional — please do not send a full proposal.) Describe your organization and the project for which funds are requested. Attach a brief budget describing income and expenses. If your request is screened in for further consideration, you will be asked to submit a full proposal.

Full Proposals. If you are invited to submit a full proposal, please prepare the following information. (The foundation will also accept the Common Grant Application developed by Philanthropy Northwest.)

  • Narrative, not to exceed four pages. Describe the organization, explain the issue being addressed, be clear on specific strategies, and generally describe who is carrying out the work. Include a workplan (if possible, quarterly for the year in which the grant award will be used) and evaluation process.

  • Organizational budget (one-page summary). Include other sources of funds — currently committed, and projected. (If you're requesting funds for a project, also include a separate project budget, including income sources and expenses.)

  • A copy of the IRS 501(c)(3) notification letter.
