Richard King Mellon Foundation Funding Policy

Approved in December 2009 and effective January 1, 2010, the Trustees established the following program priorities:


  • Land preservation
  • Watershed protection and restoration
Regional Economic Development
  • Downtown and Neighborhood Development
  • Building a Research and Technology Economy
  • Business Stimulus Initiatives and Workforce Development
  • Rural Economic Development
  • Higher Education
  • Independent and Parochial Schools
  • Early Childhood Education
Human Services
  • Broad Scale System Reform
  • Nonprofit Capacity Building
  • After School Programs
The Foundation gives priority to projects and programs that have clearly defined outcomes and an evaluation component. Applicants must have valid IRS tax identification number and a current charitable status designation. The Foundation does not consider requests on behalf of individuals, or from outside the Untied States and does not encourage requests from outside Pennsylvania.
