FAQs for Grantmakers

Where should I refer scholarship seekers?

People seeking help with funding for higher education should first contact the financial aid office at the college or university they plan to attend. FinAid's directory of Financial Aid Office Web Pages is a list of colleges and universities with financial aid offices on the World Wide Web.

Foundation Center library collections are devoted to information about foundations and corporate grantmakers and their grants. Every Foundation Center library does have a small collection of materials of interest to individuals seeking scholarships or fellowships.

Two books you may wish to refer applicants to are Financing a College Education (New York: Plenum Press, 1987) by Judith Margolin and the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants to Individuals. Financing a College Education contains practical recommendations that cover not only private scholarships and fellowships but also government assistance, loans, and work-study programs. Foundation Grants to Individuals is a comprehensive directory that describes foundation giving directly to individuals for a variety of purposes, including scholarships, student loans, fellowships, travel, internships, and residencies.

You may also wish to inform applicants about our online database, Foundation Grants to Individuals Online. Applicants are able to search through a comprehensive database of grantmaker programs that fund a wide range of educational needs, including: undergraduate and graduate scholarships and loans, fellowships, internships, grants for postgraduate and postdoctoral research, travel grants, awards, prizes, and grants by nomination.

Foundation Grants to Individuals is available to the public at our libraries in Atlanta, Cleveland, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, and at more than 200 Cooperating Collections around the country.

FinAid: The Financial Aid Information Page offers a number of useful features, including FastWeb (a free scholarship search engine) and links to government funding sources, financial aid offices, and information for international students.

Basic information on federal government funding for education is available from the U.S. Department of Education. Click here for a bibliography of print resources on Scholarships, Fellowships, and Loans found in many public and college libraries.
