New Initiative Will Engage Philanthropy in Post-2015 Global Development Process


As the Millennium Development Goals come to a close and the global aid community embarks on the post-2015 development agenda, UNDP, Foundation Center, and RPA have partnered with leading foundations to engage the philanthropic sector in the post-2015 global development process. This "Post-2015 Partnership Platform for Philanthropy" will transform collaboration and impact.

Key Facts on U.S. Foundations, 2014 Edition

According to the new edition of Key Facts on U.S. Foundations, the country's 86,192 foundations held $715 billion in assets and distributed a record $52 billion in 2012. This annual research study estimates 2013 giving at $54.7 billion and the outlook for 2014 is for growth to continue ahead of inflation, with independent and family foundations growing at a higher rate than other types of foundations.

Philanthropy & Hurricane Sandy: A Report on the Foundation & Corporate Response

Philanthropy & Hurricane Sandy: A Report on the Foundation & Corporate Response examines the response of foundations, corporations, and other institutional donors to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. It finds that nearly 600 funders have so far committed more than $380 million for relief, recovery, and building. The data in the report reveal details about who provided funding and for what purposes, which organizations received support, and where funders and recipients were located. It also highlights leading organizations in the region that have been important partners to philanthropy in the disaster response.

Community Foundation Atlas Now Available

Foundation Maps

The Community Foundation Atlas is the most comprehensive directory of the world's community foundations that has ever been published. This new online platform maps the identities, locations, assets, roles, and achievements of organizations around the world. It includes a directory and map of foundations, downloadable infographics and analyses of baseline data, and first-person accounts that show how place-based foundations are helping to advance their communities' aspirations, large and small.

Foundation Center Releases Innovative Data Visualization Platform

Foundation Maps

Foundation Maps helps funders and nonprofits access the knowledge they need to make strategic decisions and achieve greater impact. Relying on Foundation Center's deep databases of foundations and their grants, it covers more than 3 million grants totaling more than $220 billion made by over 33,000 foundations to nearly 300,000 recipients around the world. Users have the ability to generate maps and charts revealing connections between funders, their grants, and their partners around the corner and around the world.

Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers and
Foundation Center Form Strategic Alliance

Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers

This new nationwide partnership will expand access to data on philanthropy and improve foundation effectiveness. It will entail establishing platforms and systems for collecting data contributed by Forum members — 34 geographically organized associations of funders — and translating it into tools that will benefit not only the Forum membership, but the broader philanthropy sector.

New Website Captures the Global Human Rights Funding Landscape

Advancing Human Rights: Update on Global Foundation Grantmaking

Foundation Center and the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG) have produced two new resources designed to advance knowledge and facilitate strategic decision making in the field of human rights philanthropy. According to Advancing Human Rights: Update on Global Foundation Grantmaking, 745 foundations in 34 countries made over 17,000 grants totaling $1.7 billion in human rights funding in 2011. These statistics are brought to life in an interactive website that enables exploration of giving by issue focus, population focus, and region and includes top funder lists, sample grants, and case studies.

Foundation Center, InterAction Announce Partnership


The Foundation Center and InterAction (a coalition of non-governmental organizations that work on international development and humanitarian assistance) have announced a strategic partnership to promote greater visibility and understanding of global private development assistance. The partnership will focus on data sharing, capacity building, and data analysis within the NGO and foundation communities, including: increasing the amount of publicly available information; improving practice around data collection, management, and dissemination; and exploring which factors currently drive resource allocations by nonprofits, foundations, and other relevant philanthropic actors.

New Research on the Field of Black Male Achievement Highlights Successes and Opportunities


Building a Beloved Community: Strengthening the Field of Black Male Achievement is a timely resource in light of a growing chorus of national initiatives focused on improving the economic, social, and physical well-being of black males, including President Obama’s announcement in February 2014 launching My Brother’s Keeper. Based on interviews with 50 leaders in the social, academic, government, and business sectors — including Robert K. Ross, president of the California Endowment; Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation; and Emmett Carson, president and CEO of Silicon Valley Community Foundation — the report explores diverse, multi-disciplinary, and cross-sector efforts in the field.

Deborah D. Hoover Joins Foundation Center Board of Trustees

New Report on Foundation Funding to Address Domestic Violence


Foundation Funding to Address Domestic Violence in California, supported by the Blue Shield of California Foundation, is the first-ever examination of philanthropy’s contribution to the field of domestic violence. Using data from the Foundation Center’s research database, the report provides a landscape analysis to inform community organizations, funders, government agencies, and other stakeholders working to improve prevailing statistics that show one in three women will experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in her lifetime.
