First-of-its-Kind Research on Peace and
Security Funding

4/5/16
Peace and Security Funding Index: An Analysis of Global Foundation Grantmaking

A new report and interactive website produced by Foundation Center and the Peace and Security Funders Group (PSFG) showcase how peace and security funders are making important contributions to global peace and stability, despite making up a very small percentage of total foundation giving. According to the Peace and Security Funding Index: An Analysis of Global Foundation Grantmaking, 288 foundations granted more than $283 million to support over 1,200 organizations worldwide in 2013. While the top 15 funders provided two-thirds (67 percent) of all funding, most foundations engaged at far more modest levels, indicating that there are numerous models of engagement for grantmakers of any size looking to become active in the peace and security field. This first-ever analysis also finds that a majority of funding employs policy work, advocacy, and research as key strategies; and identifies opportunities for increased support in the areas of conflict prevention and cyber-security.

New Report and Tools Support Learning About Freshwater

water drop

Freshwater is one of our most valuable resources, yet water supplies across the globe are often not dependable or simply insufficient. A new synthesis report, interactive tool, and digital collection from the Pacific Institute and IssueLab, a service of Foundation Center, provide key lessons about the impact of incentive-based approaches to managing freshwater resources. Commissioned by The Rockefeller Foundation, this synthesis is an effort not only to better understand the conditions for successfully implementing these approaches but also to inform future initiatives and investments with already existing, practice-based knowledge. All of the results from this project are freely available for funders, nonprofit practitioners, and researchers to use, contribute to, and build on in their work.

In its seventh installment, Blueprint provides signature features such as predictions of global events in the coming year and a "Buzzword Watch." Bernholz also presents insights on the spread of automation and the fluctuating value and liabilities associated with prevalence of digital data (the need to balance data collection against personal privacy rights).
