Foundation Center Issues New Editions of Three Subject Guides
- Nonprofits Gain Access to Thousands of Potential Grant Sources in Various Fields -

New York, NY, July 17, 2002: The Foundation Center, the nation's premier source for information on foundation and corporate giving, has just issued new editions of the National Guide to Funding in Arts and Culture, the National Guide to Funding for the Environment and Animal Welfare, and the Guide to Funding for International and Foreign Programs. Each Guide features current facts on foundations, public charities, and corporate direct giving programs and is specifically designed for development professionals in the respective areas of activity. The volumes in this series also present descriptions of newly reported grants, providing examples of projects that have successfully attracted funding.

The Center's Timesaving Resources for Fundraisers

Jeffrey Falkenstein, Director of Foundation Database Publishing, explained that "these subject guides provide grantseekers with detailed information about U.S. grantmakers that have stated or demonstrated their commitment to these specific fields of interest. Rather than poring through large volumes of grantmakers with diverse fields of interest, grantseekers can use a single book in the series that focuses on their specific area of philanthropy, providing them with a timesaving research tool." Each of the grantmakers featured in the Guides has a history of awarding grant dollars to a wide range of institutions and projects in the specified field:

National Guide to Funding in Arts and Culture, 7th Edition—The 9,200+ grantmakers covered in this volume support theaters, museums, archaeology projects, orchestras, dance groups, and a variety of other arts and cultural programs. Over 19,000 descriptions of newly reported grants exemplify the foundations' proven giving interests.

National Guide to Funding for the Environment and Animal Welfare, 6th Edition—The 3,000+ grantmakers included in this volume award funds for international conservation, ecological research, litigation and advocacy, animal welfare, and more. With 6,500+ grant descriptions, grantseekers gain a unique insight into foundation funding priorities.

Guide to Funding for International and Foreign Programs, 6th Edition—The 1,300+ featured grantmakers in this directory provide funding for a wide range of needs: international relief, conferences, disaster assistance, human rights, civil liberties, community development education, and other projects in the U.S. and abroad. The volume contains descriptions of over 9,000 newly reported grants in the field.

Data-Packed Grantmaker Portraits Deliver Essential Facts

Subject guide entries provide fundraisers with the most important features of a particular grantmaker's program-the crucial details needed when preparing grant applications. Foundation Center researchers gather the information from annual reports, grants lists, and other reliable public records. Many grantmakers review their profiles, ensuring the highest possible level of accuracy. Grantmaker portraits include a wealth of information:

Vital Contact Information—name, address, telephone number, and contact person, plus e-mail addresses and URL's when available.

Accurate Financial Data—asset amount, gifts received, amount and number of grants awarded help determine giving potential.

Crucial Program Policies—grantmaker's statement of purpose and activities, types of support generally awarded, geographic limitations, and specific details such as application deadlines, board meeting dates, and whether an application form is needed.

Newly Reported Grants—many entries give descriptions of actual grants newly reported by the foundation, the best indication of future funding priorities. The sample grants include recipient names and their city and state, grant amounts, and intended uses.

Each subject guide features helpful indexes to facilitate fast, effective access to relevant data. Researchers can target funders using: names of key officials, preferred types of support, geographic region, subject interest, and grantmaker name. Bibliographies list additional sources of information on grantseeking in the field.
