Florida Foundation Giving Reaches $1.2 Billion,
Foundation Center Report Finds
Independent Foundations Dominate Top 10 Givers
New York, NY — June 19, 2008. Grantmaking by Florida foundations equaled nearly $1.2 billion in 2006, according to Key Facts on Florida Foundations, a Foundation Center report released today. The top 10 givers, all independent foundations, gave a total of $322 million or 27 percent of all Florida foundation giving. Other key facts highlighted in the report include:
- Foundations surveyed held assets of more than $19.2 billion.
- The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation held the top spot in both assets and giving.
- Education and human services topped the list of major interest areas for foundations surveyed.
"For decades foundation establishment in Florida paralleled the U.S. rate, but in recent years the creation of foundations in the state has outpaced national growth," said Pattie Johnson, director of the Center's regional office in Atlanta. "As is true throughout the U.S., the majority of foundations in Florida are small; 62 percent had less than $1 million in assets in 2006. But the large foundations are really large; the 10 wealthiest held $5.9 billion in assets, slightly less than one third of all assets for Florida foundations."
David A. Odahowski, president of the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, a leading Florida foundation, said, "From the time of Henry Flagler to John Ringling to Walt Disney and on to Bill Darden, Florida is a great state for entrepreneurship and wealth creation. The growth of new foundations since 1995 is a demonstrative expression of Floridians believing in the future of Florida and their willingness to commit their wealth for the benefit of generations yet unborn."
Key Facts on Florida Foundations was made possible in part by support from the Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership Center at Rollins College. It presents a snapshot of activity by 3,874 independent, corporate, community, and operating foundations in 2006. The report can be downloaded at no charge from the Gain Knowledge area of the Foundation Center's web site.
