The Complete Guide to Fund-Raising Management, by Stanley Weinstein. The NSFRE/Wiley Fund Development Series. New York: John Wiley & Sons, 1999. xii, 307 p.

Congratulations! You've just received a promotion! You're now responsible for your nonprofit organization's fundraising activities. Although elated and excited about this opportunity, you realize that you may not have the skills to effectively accomplish your new responsibilities. Here's a book that will help.

The Complete Guide to Fund-Raising Management is a solid, straightforward introduction to the principles of fundraising. With over thirty years' experience in strategic planning, training, and financial management, author Stanley Weinstein has written an easy-to-read, practical book about the most cost-effective strategies for achieving fundraising success. Step-by-step, he outlines ways to establish and strengthen your organization's fundraising program.

The Complete Guide to Fund-Raising Management offers chapters on basic fundraising practices and the fundamentals of strategic management, including analysis and planning; setting goals; monitoring the budget and record-keeping; developing a case statement; managing major gift and planned giving programs; organizing direct mail, telemarketing, and special event programs; understanding the grantsmanship process; instituting capital and endowment campaigns; and working with your board, volunteers, and consultants. Overall, more space is devoted to the techniques of raising funds from individuals rather than from foundations or corporations — and the topic of securing government grants is given less than a page. The numerous exhibits scattered throughout the text are especially useful for the new development administrator, however, and the publisher has included a computer disk with sample forms and checklists as part of the package.

With the book's focus on the details of the fundraising process, a nonprofit manager may not be able to absorb all of the author's ideas at a single sitting. And for each major topic presented here, there are books on the market that cover the subject in depth. But for the time-pressed manager, The Complete Guide to Fund-Raising Management is an excellent resource to have on his or her bookshelf.
