Foundation Description:
Digital Partners, a Seattle-based nonprofit research institute, grew out of a November 1999 conference that brought together the world's technology and philanthropic leaders and intergovernmental organizations to discuss strategies to help bridge the Digital Divide. As a result of the conference, Craig Smith, an expert in philanthropy and corporate citizenship who also worked for Microsoft researching the social impacts of technology, founded Digital Partners.

Digital Partners is currently working on a five-year initiative, with support from the Kellogg Foundation, to bring together leaders from Latin America, Africa, Eastern and Central Europe, and Asia to collaborate on digital divide related projects. The initial effort on this project is being focused on India. With a grant from the Ford Foundation, Digital Partners is working on a publication "The Digital War on Poverty" to be finished in the summer or fall of 2000. Additional projects include a four-year Solutions Laboratory based in Washington. The Laboratory's first project, planned jointly with the American Cultural Exchange, will examine how the next generation of software could invigorate efforts to achieve breakthroughs in adult illiteracy.
