"All things change," Gill wrote in a memo to his employees. "For me, my passion has moved on to philanthropy. You can't take it with you. And giving it away has been consuming more and more of my time."
Gill also said that he planned to move most of his assets to the Denver-based Gill Foundation, which works to advance the rights of gays and lesbians. Gill created the foundation in 1994 in response to Colorado's passage two years earlier of Amendment 2, which prohibited laws banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. (The amendment was eventually struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.)
The foundation, which had assets totaling roughly $163 million at the end of 1999, has donated more than $19 million since 1994.
"It's his vision that guides all of our work," said Scott Swenson, a Gill Foundation spokesman. "The news that he's going to devote all of his attention to the foundation is great for us, for all of the nonprofits funded by the fund and for the interests the Gill Foundation has in support for equal rights for gay and lesbian people nationwide."
