| Mission: | The Civic Education Project (CEP) works to enhance the development of higher education and professional education in societies engaged in political and economic transition. |
| Background: | The concept for CEP began in 1990 when two graduate students noticed a need for Social Science lecturers in the former Czechoslovakia. CEP started in 1991 with fifteen Visiting Lecturers from the U.S. teaching at eight universities in the former Czechoslovakia. Since then CEP has grown to include Visiting Lecturers from around the world and an Eastern Scholars Program that helps talented individuals return to their home countries and into the field of academia. In addition to teaching, CEP Fellows (Visiting Lecturers and Eastern Scholars collectively) take on outreach projects such as Women's Crisis Centers, panel discussions on the environment, and establishment of local human rights organizations. CEP Fellows also work closely with students to provide them with opportunities to participate in regional and international academic conferences, debate forums, and moot court competitions. |
| Current Programs: | CEP currently has more than 200 Fellows teaching at nearly 100 universities in Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. By the 2000-01 academic year, CEP also hopes to have a program established in Mongolia. The organization estimates that it reaches 20,000 students every year. Annual events include the Balkan Debate Forum (security and conflict management), the International Student Conference, and Regional Student Conferences (strengthening East-East ties). Projects currently underway include legal reform/legal clinics in Russia; human rights projects in Hungary, Romania, and the Czech and Slovak Republics; public administration cooperation in Poland; academic journals and academic writing projects in Romania and Hungary; and environmental projects in the Baltic States, Poland, and Bulgaria. |
| Recent Successes: | A CEP Eastern Scholar in Tver, Russia, recently used her stipend to open a women's crisis center and shelter. And the CEP Book Donation Project received a boost in 1999 from Visiting Lecturers who were able to convince colleagues at their home universities to donate much needed texts to regional institutions. An example of CEP's success is its breaking of the stereotypes and prejudices held by student participants in regional conferences such as the Balkan Debate Forum and the Central Asian Regional Student Conference. |
| Web Site: | The CEP Web site (www.cep.org.hu) offers a place for CEP alumni to continue to be involved in the region, and also provides current Fellows with an invaluable resource for networking in their academic field. Those interested in applying to become a CEP Fellow for 2000-01 can find information and applications at the site. |
| Funding Needs: | "Core funding" provides modest stipends to CEP Fellows, travel allowances, and book donation seed money. The organization also has a need for funding of competitions, publication of student papers, and travel and accommodation to international conferences. Donations are welcome, and program needs are listed on the CEP Web site. For further information contact the External Relations Officer by phone (203.781.0275) or email (elehrman@cep.yale.edu).

Every week, the "Spotlight" highlights the activities of a different U.S. nonprofit organization; periodically, the spotlight shifts to an NGO in a country other than the U.S. The selection of organizations for the "Spotlight" is based on criteria such as programmatic interests, geographic focus, and size to ensure the broadest possible representation of the nonprofit sector, both in the U.S. and abroad.
If you'd like to see your NPO or NGO in the "Spotlight," e-mail a description of your organization, following the above format, to spotlight@fdncenter.org, or send a hard copy via snail mail to: NPO SpotlightThe editors of Philanthropy News Digest reserve the right to edit submissions. |
