Dropped? Latino Education and Arizona's Economic Future
There has been little progress over the past decade in closing the achievement gap among Latino students in Arizona — a trend that bodes ill for the state's economy, a report from the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University warns. According to Dropped? Latino Education and Arizona's Economic Future (40 pages, PDF), educational attainment among Latinos in Arizona has risen only slightly since 2000, even as they make up an ever greater share of the workforce. And with education and skills training expected to become even more important to workforce quality and individual earning potential, low educational achievement among Latinos is likely to contribute to declines in average income, purchasing power, economic growth, and tax revenues. Funded by the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust and the Helios Education Foundation, the report urges state government to engage all Arizonans in a discussion of education reform, increase funding for education, and address barriers to Latino educational attainment, including socioeconomic issues.
