Arts and Culture

Connections - Arts & Economic Prosperity IV: The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Culture Organizations and Their Audiences The nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $135.2 billion in economic activity nationwide in 2010, a report from Americans for the Arts finds. According to Arts & Economic Prosperity IV: The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Culture Organizations and Their Audiences (378 pages, PDF), nonprofit arts and cultural organizations pumped $61.1 billion into the economy in direct expenditures — including salaries, supply purchases, and service contracts — while their audiences spent $74.1 billion at area restaurants, shops, hotels, and parking garages. Funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ruth Lilly Fund of Americans for the Arts, the study — the fourth in a series — also notes that average audience spending fell from $27.79 per person per event in 2005 to $24.60 in 2010, a more than 20 percent decline after adjusting for inflation.
