Supporting First-Generation College Students Through Classroom-Based Practices Strategies for supporting first-generation college students and boosting retention and graduation rates should include support structures and classroom practices that create a blended academic and social environment, a report from the Institute for Higher Education Policy argues. Supporting First-Generation College Students Through Classroom-Based Practices (30 pages, PDF) examined existing policies and initiatives and promising practices at minority-serving institutions and found that although faculty can help bridge departmental divides, curricular and pedagogical reforms are needed to create engaging and dynamic classroom experiences. According to the report, evidence-based approaches also foster a culture of innovation, while external partnerships are crucial to long-term success. Funded by Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, the report calls for a multi-pronged approach to data- and faculty-driven classroom-based practices to improve student success.
