Photos and Videos as Social Currency Online

Photos and Videos as Social Currency Online Nearly half (46 percent) of Internet users post original photos and videos online, while 41 percent curate photos and videos they find on the Internet and re-post them on image- and video-sharing sites such as Pinterest and YouTube, and 32 percent do both, a survey by the Pew Research Center's Pew Internet & American Life Project finds. According to Photos and Videos as Social Currency Online (16 pages, PDF), 12 percent of Internet users ages 18 and older use Pinterest, which is dominated by women; 12 percent use Instagram, which is dominated by young adults ages 18 to 29; and 5 percent use Tumblr. The rise of photos and videos as social currency, especially among young adults, the report notes, is likely facilitated by the spread of smartphones and the prevalence of social media sites that make curating activity easy and accessible.
