The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the foremost museum of modern art in the world, whose mission is to encourage an ever-deeper understanding and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art by the diverse audiences that is serves, seeks a Director, Special Events.
The Director, Special Events, reports to the Senior Deputy Director of External Affairs. The successful candidate will be an efficient, effective, and innovative leader, capable of overseeing ongoing development and outreach activities while juggling new initiatives in collaboration with the Senior Deputy Director of External Affairs, the senior curatorial and management team and members of the MoMA Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will be a mature and confident team-oriented individual who is accustomed to working with talented individuals in a group environment. The Director of Special Events is responsible for the planning and execution of the Museum’s many events each year, including the Party in the Garden, the Film Benefit and the David Rockefeller Luncheon, which, along with corporate events, raise more than $7 million annually. She/he will supervise, manage and mentor staff on the special events team. The candidate will possess superior social sk ills to mix comfortably with the Museum’s main benefactors. The successful candidate should have ability to forge strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders throughout the organization; be both a good listener and an effective communicator; be passionate about the mission of the institution and able to articulate its curatorial, educational and other mission-related goals; exhibit creativity and the ability to take risks balanced with good judgment and a commitment to benchmarking, transparency and accountability; identify opportunities to leverage MoMA’s uniqueness and expand its traditional bases of philanthropic support; and cultivate a global network of potential event donors and sponsors.
Major responsibilities include: developing a plan for the Special Events Department to achieve fund raising goals; creating income and expense budgets for each event and monitoring financial details; overseeing the management of the master events schedule for MoMA; planning and managing events in a timely and fiscally responsible manner, including tracking and monitoring systems for ticket and table sales; organizing and managing prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation for event chairs and honorees; overseeing menus, catering, décor, rentals, seating and place card management of tables; partnering with marketing for copy on invitations, ads, dinner programs, thank-you notes and other printed materials for events; drafting remarks and serving as liaison with speakers at events; and overseeing invitations and logistics for cultivation and stewardship events, including Trustee receptions and lecture series, subscriber events, and International Council event s.
Qualifications include: minimum of 10 years of event management experience, preferably running large-scale and highly visible events in an arts or cultural organization; experience working with high-level donors, trustees and diverse constituencies; excellent communication skills, financial acumen, and strong attention to detail. Already established networks in New York social and cultural circles will be a tremendous asset. Multiple linguistic skills as well as a global network of contacts strongly desired. PC Proficiency. Bachelor’s degree required; advanced academic background in Arts Administration or Business a plus. The candidate should have a strong understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art.
