Position Title: Deputy Director, Global Programs

Foundation Overview:
Established in 1999, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation’s primary mission is to improve the standard of living and quality of life for the world’s most impoverished and marginalized populations. We work to achieve our mission by focusing our funding in three core areas: 1) food security; 2) water security; and 3) conflict resolution, management and post-conflict development. Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

• Developing and making funding recommendations on grant proposals;
• Monitoring performance and compliance for a portfolio of funded grants;
• Liaising with grantees and external consultants on specifics grants and proposals;
• Providing regular updates on grant portfolio and grantee performance, and making recommendations on areas for improvement;
• Managing program staff to conduct research, provide analysis, and build issue expertise as needed to support the Foundation’s priorities or areas of new interest;
• Providing oversight, feedback and professional development coaching for program staff;
• Developing briefings, trip reports, meeting materials as needed;
• Supporting large-scale communications or research projects as necessary;
• Managing a handful of key special projects as needed.

Qualifications:

• A graduate level degree (business, economics, government/policy, etc) is required.
• 8-10 years of paid work experience in a foundation, public policy, political and/or campaign, consulting or Fortune 500 corporate social responsibility role required, with agricultural/food security focus preferred;
• Demonstrated management experience overseeing and managing teams;
• Demonstrated experience managing and providing professional development guidance for staff;
• Superior oral and written communication skills;
• Superior analytical capabilities;
• Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to take ownership of problems and use good judgment in decision-making;
• Outstanding organizational and project management skills with an ability to develop project plans from concepts and execute to conclusion;
• Ability to successfully multi-task and deliver in a timely manner, with outstanding attention to detail and sense of urgency;
• Computer proficiency – Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, with prior international travel experience required;
• Ability to manage confidential information and situations with efficiency, flexibility and diplomacy;
• Intellectual curiosity and a passion for impact-driven philanthropy.

Additional Restrictions:

All candidates must be willing to relocate to Decatur, IL area full-time to be considered.
