The Atlantic Philanthropies (Atlantic) is a global grant-making foundation dedicated to bringing lasting changes that will improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Atlantic has awarded grants totalling over $6 billion worldwide over the past thirty years. Atlantic concentrates its grant-making efforts in four Program areas: Ageing, Children and Youth, Population Health and Reconciliation and Human Rights.
Position Summary
The Program Associate (PA) provides grantmaking and management support to the Country Director for all U.S. Programs. To carry out these responsibilities, the PA works closely with the Country Director, Program Executives and other Program Associates to ensure effective and open communication, to coordinate the grants development, review and approval process, as well as the on-going monitoring and support for current grants. The PA interacts regularly with individuals and groups outside the foundation, including grantees, key interest groups, government officials and other foundation executives. S/he participates in regular strategy reviews and assists with the implementation of strategy through the grantmaking process. Additional responsibilities include basic tasks essential to the effective running of the Country Director and U.S. Programs offices and the office environment as appropriate.
Responsibilities
- The Program Associate will maintain a commitment to Atlantic’s purpose, values, strategy – in word and deed.
- Manage communications within the office of the Country Director and between that office and other parts of the foundation, including office of the President, Senior Vice President, other Country Directors (outside of the U.S.) and U.S. Program Executives and Associates.
- Represent Atlantic with grantees and other outside groups during the grant making process, and be the point of contact for grantees and others who seek to interact with the U.S. Country Director and Program Executives.
- Ensure that the process of grants development, review and approval is smooth and fully transparent to all.
- When requested, accompany the Country Director or Program Executives to meetings with existing and potential grantees.
- Assist the Country Director and Program Executives in creating and editing documents, generating reports and compiling information in an accurate, timely and well presented manner.
- Draft papers, reports and other documents that address priority areas of the foundation.
- Plan/schedule workflow to ensure smooth co-ordination between relevant parties.
- Coordinate internal and external meeting schedules for Country Director.
- Carry out other office duties as required: including but not limited to convening meetings, representing the Country Director in meetings, initiating contact with key constituents of the foundation.
- Plan, coordinate and provide logistical support to grantee and Program convenings/meetings
- Take on special projects as assigned, including but not limited to, support for consultants, support for evaluation/evaluators, and serving on internal working groups.
- Perform any other duties as agreed with the Country Director.

Personal and Interpersonal Qualifications
- A flexible and dependable team player, who is also a self starter and has the ability to work independently;
- Organisation, planning, prioritization, time and project management skills
- Strong verbal and writing skills;
- Critical thinking skills with the ability to analyse proposals rigorously including financial skills to evaluate Program budgets;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse range of people from different environments and at all levels;
- Ability to cope with ambiguity and change;
- A sense of humor
Education, Qualifications and Other Personal Qualities
- A Master’s degree or equivalent preferred
- Knowledge of and experience in not-for-profit organizations and/or the philanthropic sector
- Experience working in and helping manage diverse teams
- Understanding of grants administration a plus
- A personal passion for social justice a plus
- An interest in, and experience of, relevant programmatic issues, such as aging, children and youth and human rights
- Strong computer and technical skills (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook and Web based research)
- Willingness to travel to attend meetings and conferences as needed.
