Jewish Museum - Director of Development

This position is responsible for overall implementation of a comprehensive annual campaign to raise more than $3 million in restricted gifts, grants, and corporate sponsorships in support of exhibitions, education programs and other special projects (excluding acquisitions) and for directly managing the fund raising for a portfolio of assigned projects. Increasing effectiveness of raising major gifts and sponsorships for exhibitions from foundation and corporate sources is a key responsibility. Other priorities include writing foundation proposals for major gifts, devising new strategies for education support, providing stewardship for endowments and crafting endowment proposals as assigned. The Director works closely with program staff and has direct access to executive staff, trustees, and major donors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with staff, trustees, and other key volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, recognize, and renew restricted gifts. Develop long-term strategies for achieving fund raising goals, expanding the donor base and developing new funding sources.
  • Develop departmental funding goals as part of annual budget process. Work with the Finance Department throughout the fiscal year to monitor income projections.
  • Develop funding proposals and budgets, as well as oversee the development of funding proposals and budgets by other department staff.
  • Oversee grant compliance and donor stewardship.
  • Provide stewardship of restricted endowments.
  • Develop and monitor departmental expense budget. Monitor cash receipts from grants and pledges. Prepare status reports for management and trustee oversight committees.
  • Evaluate funding strategies and recommend improvements.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop proposals for program-related endowment gifts.
  • Cultivate and lobby elected officials to advocate for public support of the arts.

Qualifications:

Minimum B.A./B.S. degree; graduate degree desirable. Minimum of 5 years of middle to senior level development experience preferably in a cultural or educational institution. Strong writing, communication, and negotiation skills. Ability to develop and monitor project budgets. Self-starter able to manage multiple projects in a high pressure, demanding environment. Periodic evening and weekend hours required. Ability to work effectively with key volunteers and conduct in-person solicitations. Compensation, which includes a generous benefits package, is commensurate with experience.
