The Leadership & Sustainability Institute (LSI) for Black Male Achievement is a national membership network that seeks to ensure the growth, sustainability, and impact of leaders and organizations across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors committed to improving the life outcomes and systemic change for black men and boys. As part of the Open Society Foundations’ Campaign for Black Male Achievement, Root Cause recently completed a business planning process for the LSI and is now co-leading implementation with PolicyLink. About the Position
Root Cause is seeking a full-time Fellow to join the team that is launching the Leadership & Sustainability Institute (LSI) for Black Male Achievement. The Fellow will have the opportunity to develop project management and communication skills by participating in the start-up and growth of a major national initiative to increase the impact and sustainability of leaders and organizations that focus on improving the life outcomes of black men and boys.
Position Duration
Start Date: Immediately End Date: Through end of July 2014, with the option to continue if both parties are amenable
What we're looking for
For this role, we are looking for a motivated, personable, and detail-oriented team member who has knowledge of and passion for the black male achievement field to support project management for the LSI team.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Fellow across both initiatives are set out below, but are subject to evolve over the course of implementation.
Coordination and Logistics

Support day-to-day logistics and operations of the LSI, including managing calendar and scheduling of meetings, calls, and events

Support general communications and outreach
-
Coordinate and manage external relationships (e.g., with members, partners, and funders, etc)
-
Coordinate logistics of all calls, meetings, and events
Research Assistance
-
Support data analysis including collecting data from a variety of database and research sources
-
Support data gathering for financial analysis
-
Support and coordinate the development and analysis of surveys, including use of web-based survey tools
-
Conduct secondary and primary research on organizations in the field and articles, research reports, and other resources, including identifying information sources and synthesizing findings
Development
-
Assist with grant administration and writing of proposals and reports

Research potential funding sources
-
Track and maintain database to support relationship management
Overall Support
-
Assist with drafting, editing and formatting internal and external materials including memos, PowerPoint presentations, reports, website content, etc.

Support the development, maintenance, and update of technology platform
-
Provide as-needed support to assist with overall LSI execution
Requirements
-
Bachelor’s degree
-
Interest in, knowledge of, and/or experience in the field of black male achievement
-
Strong writing and communication skills, including excellent phone manner
-
Strong interpersonal skills, including professionalism, confidence and poise in working with people in senior-level
-
positions and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

Desire to learn and grow as a team member in a dynamic organization

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Self-motivation and self-directedness

Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks efficiently

Flexibility with regard to priorities and deadlines

Solid technical skills and willingness to learn new web tools and computer programs

Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

Experience with HTML, WordPress, Salesforce, VerticalResponse is a plus
