Teach For America - Managing Director, Data and Operations

The Managing Director, Data & Operations is responsible for leading a team of 17 staff who support, develop, and build the back-office systems, services, and strategic analysis that enable Teach For America's growth, development, and partnerships. The four sub-teams, Data Quality & Efficiency, Pipeline Support, Training and Reporting, and Strategy, will support and enable our growth to nearly 60 sites and 15,000 corps members by 2015, and an increase in funding from $270M to over $400M. The MD reports directly to the VP, Learning and Operations and is a key member of the Learning and Operations leadership team. The MD will also collaborate with leaders across other teams including Finance and Technology.

Team Overview

The Growth, Development & Partnerships team mission is to build an ever-expanding and increasingly diverse movement of leaders in the private and public sectors committed to educational excellence and opportunity for all children.

Responsibilities

Team leadership: Set an ambitious vision and direction for an evolving Data & Operations team. Build, develop and retain a high performing team. Manage and support four direct reports. Ensure every sub-teams (Pipeline Support, Data Quality and Efficiency, Training and Reporting and Strategy) have the appropriate priorities, strategies, talent, processes, and resources to achieve their goals in the short and long-term.

Data, Research & Reporting: Oversee design and operation of our recently adopted database (Salesforce), tools, and systems to house and report reliable and comprehensive development, district and school partner, and community and legislative partner data and progress. Ensure effective delivery of training and protocols to ensure user adoption and data integrity. Ensure that our database has robust, centrally organized knowledge base of all donors and prospects across the organization that is utilized to drive meeting preparation, strategy planning, goal-setting, and benchmarking. Ensure all reporting helps to drive effective management and continuous improvement across the Growth, Development and Partnership team.

Revenue Operations: Establish best in class accuracy and efficiency of processing for all donations to Teach For America so that gift data is audit-ready. Ensure that all regional and national development, district, school, and government affairs staff are equipped to execute gift processing related activities. Foster partnership with Finance and other teams to ensure smooth gift processing, financial reporting and forecasting, and accuracy within Salesforce system. Enable team to prepare, track, and maximize revenue of national restricted grants.

Learning & Operations Leadership Team : Serve as a member of the L&O Leadership Team. Contribute to the broader strategy for long-term planning, annual priority-setting, building a strong team, cross-functional collaboration, and other cross-team decisions.

Skills - demonstrated experience:

  • Ability to set vision, direction and ensure alignment across multiple teams
  • History of creating cultures of success, with team members operating with high level of leadership, ownership, being bold and feeling supported when taking risks and innovating
  • Ability to cultivate, develop and retain highly effective teams, and manage team execution toward goals
  • Ability to build strong internal relationships
  • Ability to design and manage efficient systems and quality controls

Approach to Work:

  • Strong customer service ethic
  • Excels in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Interest in making a material impact on the education sector

Technical Skills

  • Salesforce or other CRM database experience required
  • Experience working with finance staff and auditors is helpful, but not required
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Powerpoint

Education and Professional Experience

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of seven years of work experience
  • Prior management experience required; two to four years of management experience preferred
  • Prior experience in managing high volume, data-intensive, customer-facing operations are preferred (e.g. technology, product management, sales operations)
