United States Artists Announces 2012 Fellows

United States Artists, a national grantmaking and advocacy organization, has announced the recipients of the 2012 USA Fellowships.

Based in 19 states and ranging in age from 31 to 81, the 54 fellows include artists working in the fields of architecture and design, crafts and traditional arts, dance, literature, media, music, theater arts, and visual arts. Forty-six individuals and four collaborations will each receive unrestricted grants of $50,000 through the program, which has awarded $17.5 million to 371 artists since 2006.

This year's USA Fellows include novelist Annie Proulx, jazz musician Jack DeJohnette, architects Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto, contemporary dance choreographer Trisha Brown, installation and social practice artist Theaster Gates, and playwright and opera librettist David Henry Hwang.

"Despite achieving success in their fields, many artists still struggle for resources," said USA board chair Samuel Hoi. "USA provides essential support, financial and otherwise, that enables artists to continue to create new work and push the boundaries of their creativity. Through the USA Fellows program and the ongoing success of the micro-philanthropy initiative USA Projects, which has now raised over $3 million from twenty thousand donors for artists' dream projects, USA is impacting more of America's finest artists than ever before."
