Community Foundation Update (12/29/12)

Community Foundation Update (12/29/12) Georgia

The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has announced Arts Clayton (in the small- to mid-size organization category) and Jewish Family and Career Services (large organization category) as the winners of its 2012 Managing for Excellence awards. Each organization will receive a $25,000 grant.

Michigan

The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has announced the establishment of three action networks — Kindergarten Readiness, College and Career Readiness, and Adult Learning — to work with the foundation's Backbone Team to develop action plans that include specific measures which can be used to understand, assess, and report progress; highlight local expertise as well as proven and promising practices; and detail an approach to addressing racial, ethnic, gender, and economic achievement disparities in the community.

The Detroit-based Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has appointed Katie G. Brisson as vice president of programs.

New York

The New York State Office of the Attorney General has announced that the New York Community Trust will administer the Brooke Astor Fund for New York City Education, which was established earlier this year under a settlement of the late philanthropist's estate. Initially valued at $30 million, the fund now controls approximately $42 million in assets, in part thanks to a successful multi-day auction of Astor's personal property.

North Carolina

The Salisbury Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Charlotte-based Foundation for the Carolinas, has announced grants totaling $101,525 to local nonprofit agencies. Recipients include Food for Thought, Livingstone College, the Rowan Museum, and the Rowan Care Alliance.

Wisconsin

The Door County Community Foundation in Sturgeon Bay has changed its discretionary grants program, the Daily News reports. Instead of awarding funding from a specific fund such as arts or historic preservation, as in the past, the foundation will award grants for sustainability to cover operational costs, and for advancement, to enable and encourage local organizations to collaborate.
