Series of Volunteer Projects Mark Katrina Anniversary

Series of Volunteer Projects Mark Katrina Anniversary

United We Serve, an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service, has announced that in the days leading up to the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast, nearly a hundred Obama administration officials and federal employees joined local organizations in New Orleans for a series of homebuilding projects.

The projects were part of Safety and Security Week, which, beginning Monday, August 24, highlighted the role that volunteers play in helping communities prepare for and recover from disasters and in supporting veterans and military families. Other activities around the country included the launch of the American Legion Auxiliary VISTA Project Supporting Veterans in Lexington, Kentucky; the Honor Flights for WWII Veterans, in which veterans visited the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.; Fire Ready Montana; and the launch of New AmeriCorps NCCC Campus in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The United We Serve initiative was launched June 22 and will continue through September 11, which has been designated as a National Day of Service by President Obama.

"Volunteers have given hope and help to millions of Gulf Coast residents after Katrina and are critical to building a stronger future for the Coast," said Nicola Goren, acting CEO of the corporation. "By shining the spotlight on their good works, we hope more will answer the President's call to service."
