Kaiser Permanente Announces $19 Million in Third-Quarter Grants
Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente, a leading healthcare provider, has announced third-quarter grants totaling $19 million to four hundred and sixty-five nonprofit organizations.
Grants this quarter were awarded to improve the quality of care in public hospitals and community clinics, create respite care programs for the homeless, provide communities with access to healthy foods during hard economic times, and award scholarships to children interested in careers in health care. They include $309,000 to the Oregon Health Career Center to develop a healthcare career scholarship program; $300,000 to the Health Care Interpreters Network to develop a statewide video network linking public hospitals with interpreters; $200,000 to the California Association of Food Banks and California Food Policy Advocates; and $325,000 to the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta to support a multiyear study that assesses the effect of various interventions on identified health risks, make scholarships available for a twelve-week youth exercise and nutrition program, and provide grants to support physical activity and healthy eating programs.
"We are continuing our long-term commitment to improving the quality of care at public hospitals and community clinics and to support innovative programs that prevent chronic illnesses for the uninsured and under- served," said Raymond J. Baxter, senior vice president of Community Benefit, Research and Health Policy at Kaiser Permanente. "As part of our strategic partnership with our communities, we are addressing the immediate needs of people who are struggling to put food on the table coupled with our long-term goal to ensure access to healthy foods," adds Baxter. "In both hard times and good times, healthy foods are always the right choice, and we are committed to ensuring access to healthy options."
