University of Iowa Receives $26.4 Million for Biomedical Research

University of Iowa Receives $26.4 Million for Biomedical Research

The Iowa City-based University of Iowa has announced a $26.4 million commitment from longtime donors John and Mary Pappajohn to support the university's new biomedical research institute.

In recognition of the gift, which was made to the UI Foundation, the Pappajohn Institute will house the John and Mary Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building. The institute will provide a single facility in which a broad spectrum of researchers and scientists can collaborate to explore high-risk, high-yield research opportunities in the life sciences. Part of a larger university effort to bring together scientists from multiple disciplines to pursue biomedical research, the facility will include laboratories and office space dedicated to leading-edge, cross-disciplinary research involving scientists from across the entire campus.

With this latest gift, the Pappajohns have committed $38.6 million to the university and have several facilities named in their honor, including the Pappajohn Business Building, the Pappajohn Pavilion at UI Hospitals and Clinics, and the John and Mary Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center.

"Our relationship with the Pappajohns is based not only on their generosity, but also — and perhaps more importantly — on their vision," said UI president Sally Mason. "In an age when the university is reinventing itself in response to the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century, John and Mary Pappajohn are leaders in helping UI advance research and education in service to our changing society."

“Pappajohns' $26.4 Million Gift Will Name UI Biomedical Research Institute.” University of Iowa Press Release 10/29/09.
