Community Foundation Update (11/07/09)

Community Foundation Update (11/07/09)

California

The Novato-based Marin Community Foundation has announced a $250,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco to help launch the organization's neighborhood revitalization program, which will work to revitalize neighborhoods that have been destabilized by foreclosures and creating responsible homeownership opportunities for local working families. Habitat has purchased a vacant lot and a foreclosed home, which it has begun to reconstruct.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust has announced twelve grants totaling $500,000 to spur growth of new sources of quality local news and information about the Chicago region. The awards are part of the trust's Community News Matters initiative, which was launched with a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Grants ranging from $30,000 to $60,000 were awarded to initiatives created by both nonprofits and for-profits.

Missouri

The Springfield-based Community Foundation of the Ozarks and several partners have established the Community Response Challenge Grants initiative, which is designed to provide basic needs such as food, health care, and shelter for people in need while helping to prevent child abuse and neglect, the Springfield News-Leader reports. To date, a total of $650,000 has been raised.

North Carolina

The Charlotte-based Foundation for the Carolinas has announced a $250,000 gift to the Community Catalyst Fund from the Spangler family and the C.D. Spangler Foundation. The recently established fund is designed to enable nonprofits to reposition themselves to meet a future characterized by increased demands for services and diminished funding.

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro has announced the launch of its annual campaign to benefit the Thanksgiving Fund, which provides a holiday meal to needy residents who otherwise might not receive one. From November 2 through Thanksgiving Day, people may contribute to the fund through the foundation's Web site or by mailing a check to the foundation. Last year, the fund provided $12,000 to make four thousand meals available to Greensboro's homeless, hungry, homebound, and elderly poor.

Oregon

The Portland-based Oregon Community Foundation has announced the availability of up to $1 million for school districts that want to start a community school program or sustain one that exists in the region, which includes the Warm Springs Reservation and Crook, Deschutes, Jefferson, Sherman, Wasco, and Wheeler counties. Proposals are due on January 15, 2010 and funding decisions will be announced in April, 2010.

Washington

To broaden its appeal to donors, the Seattle Foundation is revamping its Web site, which will offer detailed profiles and reviews of the nonprofits and programs it funds, the Seattle Times reports. Expected to launch early next year, the new site will have an Amazon.com-style recommendations feature to help people find programs related to their interests. The foundation hopes to reach as many as 1.5 million people over the next several years, getting them involved in some way with the foundation's programs.
