Getty Foundation Awards $1.95 Million to Claremont Graduate University for Leadership Institute

Getty Foundation Awards $1.95 Million to Claremont Graduate University for Leadership Institute

Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California, has announced a $1.95 million grant from the Getty Foundation in support of the Getty Leadership Institute.

The grant will support the continued operation of the institute, which provides professional development for current and future museum leaders, through 2015, as well as a re-envisioning of its programs, curriculum, and staff structure as it undergoes a leadership transition with the retirement of executive director Phil Nowlen at the end of the year. The Museum Leadership Institute and other GLI programs planned for 2013 will be suspended while a new strategic plan is developed. New programs, webinars, and online coursework also will be developed, along with a distinguished speakers' series.

GLI grew out of the Museum Leadership Institute, originally called the Museum Management Institute, which was established in 1979 in Berkeley under the auspices of the Art Museum Association of America and the University of California Extension. The J. Paul Getty Trust assumed financial responsibility for the program in 1984. It became Getty's in-house program in 2000, moved to the Getty Center in 2004, and has been located at CGU since 2010.

"It is a crucial moment in the institute's history as it undergoes its own leadership transition and seeks new opportunities to meet the needs of the field going forward," said Getty Foundation director Deborah Marrow. "I congratulate Phil Nowlen and everyone who has worked with him to achieve the many accomplishments of the GLI over the past years. I look forward to the ways in which CGU will build on this distinguished track record and forge new directions in the future."
