Community Foundation Update (11/17/12) | PND

Jewish Family & Children's Service of Sarasota-Manatee has announced a grant of $50,000 from the Venice Endowment Fund of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation in support of its Building Stronger Families program, which works to prevent homelessness among families with children or a disabled family member. As a result of the grant, JFCS also received a one-to-one match from the Siemer Family Foundation.

To encourage the establishment of endowment funds for each of the thirteen counties it serves, the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area has announced that it will match up to $15,000 donated to any of the funds. Each county's endowment fund has been established in perpetuity to provide charitable support in the that county. The initiative was inspired by a similar effort conducted by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, which saw charitable giving in the region grow dramatically as a result.

The Central Indiana Community Foundation has announced the creation of the Dion and Jennifer Longworth Memorial Fund, which will support educational scholarships and grants as well as community beautification projects.

The Dyersville Community Area Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, has awarded a total of $3,090 to six organizations, the Dyersville Commercial reports. Recipients include the New Vienna Historical Society, St. Joseph Child Care Center, and the James Kennedy Public Library.

The New York Community Trust has announced it is making up to $500,000 in emergency grants available to twenty groups providing disaster relief. Recipients include the Astella Development Corporation, the Community Health Action of Staten Island, City Harvest, and Ocean Bay Community Development. The trust's New York Critical Needs - Hurricane Sandy Fund will continue to accept donations, and the trust will assess the city's longer-term recovery needs and make grants accordingly.

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation has awarded its 2012 philanthropist of the year awards, the Martinsburg Journal reports. Farmers and Mechanics Insurance received the Corporate Philanthropist of the Year Award; Bonn "Buzz" and Lisa Poland were named the Individual Philanthropist of the Year Award; and Chelsea Hessler accepted the Youth Philanthropist of the Year Award.
