Alleghany Foundation Awards $1.1 Million to Ten Local Nonprofits

The Alleghany Foundation in Covington, Virginia, has announced grants totaling more than $1.1 million to ten local nonprofit organizations working in the areas of community capacity, economic transformation, educational attainment, health and wellness, and leadership and civic vitality.

The Alleghany Highlands YMCA received the lion's share of the total awarded, including $284,122 for the final payment on its capital construction debt, $140,400 in support of its Virginia Preschool Initiative and Child Care program, and $22,578 for leadership and civility classes.

In addition, the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism was awarded a three-year, $275,000 grant in support of its Alleghany Blueway Initiative, which is designed to highlight the area's lakes, rivers, and streams as destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. Other grants included $177,750 to Jackson River Enterprises to optimize its recycling facility; $96,680 to the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council for its artists-in-residency programs and matching funds for fundraising efforts; and $40,000 to the C&O Historical Society for the restoration of a Shenandoah Pullman Sleeper Car.
