KIDS COUNT Data Center

Mission:
To measure child outcomes and contribute to public accountability for those outcomes, resulting in a model for data-driven advocacy for children, their families, and their communities.

Background:
The KIDS COUNT Data Center works in conjunction with other components of the Annie E. Casey Foundation-funded KIDS COUNT initiative, including the annual KIDS COUNT Data Book, the RIGHT START for America's Newborns report, and a national network of state-level KIDS COUNT projects. The initiative itself is designed to gauge the seriousness of the problems facing children and inform policy trends and goals on their behalf. Launched in January 2008 to replace the KIDS COUNT State Level Data Online system, the redesigned KIDS COUNT Data Center includes the most recent data available for the country, individual states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the fifty largest U.S. cities. The database contains more than one hundred measures of child well-being, including the ten measures regularly used in the KIDS COUNT Data Book.

Outstanding Web Features:
The KIDS COUNT Data Center Web site allows users to view census data, generate custom profiles by state and city, and compare the performance of individual states by topic. Visitors to the site can also view a wealth of community-level information in graph, map, ranked table, and raw data format.
