North Star Fund Accepting Applications for Final Year of Greening Western Queens Fund
North Star Fund Accepting Applications for Final Year of Greening Western Queens Fund
The North Star Fund, a public foundation in New York City that supports grassroots groups leading the movement for equality, economic justice, and peace, has announced requests for proposals for the third and final year of the Greening Western Queens Fund.
The fund is a $7.9 million initiative to invest in energy efficiency, education, and environmental infrastructure projects in the western Queens communities affected by a July 2006 electric power outage. The program is supported by funds from the communities' settlement with Con Edison. The fund seeks to support projects that will result in tangible physical and visible improvements to Long Island City, Woodside, Sunnyside, and Astoria.
The fund will only consider applications from groups that are tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations or have a fiscal sponsor with 501(c)(3) status. Small groups of residents may apply for a project but will need a fiscal sponsor. Organizations do not need to be located in the affected area to qualify for a grant, but projects must be.
Projects will be funded in the categories of urban forestry and greening infrastructure/other greening projects. All projects must contribute to a more environmentally sustainable western Queens, result in visible and lasting impact in the affected communities, and ensure that products and outcomes are public, accessible, and beneficial to residents of the affected areas.
The fund will consider grants requests of up to $1.5 million in the urban forestry category. In the greening infrastructure and other greening projects category, the fund will award a total of $100,000, with grants ranging between $5,000 to $20,000 for small projects and up to an additional $1 million for larger projects (with the maximum grant amount $500,000).
Complete program guidelines, the application form, eligibility map, and information on previously funded projects are available at the North Star Fund Web site.
