2005: The Year in Review
PND Special Issue - 2005: The Year in Review
It was a year that the ancient Greeks might have
appreciated, from the catastrophic Indian Ocean tsunami
that claimed 200,000 lives, to the hurricanes that
devastated large swaths of the Gulf Coast and delivered a
near-fatal blow to a great American city, to the October
earthquake that brought the world crashing down on tens of
thousands of Kashmiri villagers, 2005 reminded us that
even the best-laid plans are child's play when confronted
by the awesome power of nature. And yet, it was also a
year in which the indomitable majesty of the human spirit
revealed itself, as these and other tragedies inspired
countless acts of individual generosity and selflessness.
As the year comes to a close, the editors of PND honor
that spirit while looking back at some of the important
philanthropic stories and personalities of 2005.
