2006: The Year in Review

PND Special Issue - 2006: The Year in Review

While we usually try to avoid superlatives, it's hard not to suggest that 2006 will be remembered as the dawn of a new golden age of philanthropy. From Warren Buffett's multi-billion-dollar gift to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, already the country's largest, to the maturation and demonstrated effectiveness of microfinance as a tool in the increasingly important fight against global poverty, 2006 showcased philanthropy at its best and made clear the hopes and optimism of all those who strive to make the world a safer, healthier, and more equitable place.

As the year comes to a close, the editors of PND honor that spirit and those individuals while looking back at some of the important philanthropic stories and personalities of 2006.
