NPO Spotlight - CITYarts, Inc.
To create public art that addresses civic and social issues, changes lives, and transforms communities.
About the Organization:
CITYarts is a public art and arts education nonprofit that works in collaboration with youth and professional artists to address civic, social, and educational issues. Since 1968, CITYarts has created over 278 projects, collaborated with more than 500 artists, partnered with over 1,500 sponsors, and engaged more than 5,000 volunteers.
CITYarts offers five programs: Young Minds Build Bridges, which brings together groups of youth from different countries and cultural backgrounds to work toward a common artistic goal; Community Identity, which enables local communities to collaborate and create art; Kids for Justice, which encourages youth between the ages of 10 and 18 to develop and express their thoughts on justice through the creation of permanent murals for their schools; Tribute to New York and New Yorkers, a response to the events of September 11; and Windows of Opportunity, in which artistically talented youth between the ages of 10 and 18 are enrolled in programs at major art institutions, learning centers, special projects, and with individual artists. In addition, the organization's Global HeART Warming project, launched in 2009 in partnership with the Health and Climate Foundation, is designed to engage youth in discussions about the current state of the environment and to create artworks that express their concerns and hopes for the future.
The CITYarts Web site provides profiles of ongoing projects, a list of projects awaiting funding, and a Google map that shows the location of various CITYarts projects. The site also provides links to video and artwork from the organization's Pieces for Peace mosaic, which features art created by youth from around the world, as well as an online store and a donations page.
CITYarts receives funding from foundations, corporations, individuals, and local and state government.
