To give victims and survivors of human trafficking a voice in their lives, liberate victims, end their slavery, and empower survivors as they create and sustain lives of dignity.
About the Organization:
Determined to do something about the $12 billion a year global sex slave trade, Air Force Academy graduates Jared Greenberg and Nicholas Lumpp traveled to Southeast Asia to meet Somaly Mam, whom they were introduced to in a CNN news segment online in 2007. At 12, Cambodia native Mam was sold into slavery but later escaped and made it her life's mission to rescue and rehabilitate sex slave victims through the nongovernmental organization she helped establish in 1996, AFESIP (Agir Pour les Femmes en Situation Precaire). Inspired by her story and fortitude, Greenberg and Lumpp helped Mam to bring her vision of a U.S.-based organization working to eradicate human trafficking to life.
Current Programs:
In collaboration with partner organizations in Southeast Asia, SMF provides sex trafficking victims rescue and recovery services, including food, shelter, and medical and psychological care for at least three years; funding for education and vocational training programs to prepare for reintegration; and a platform to help them help others, by speaking to new victims brought to SMF centers, completing intake forms, teaching classes, and sharing life-skills training. The foundation also manages awareness and advocacy campaigns in the U.S. and around the world. Through its latest initiative, PROJECT FUTURES global, the foundation enables students, activists, and young professionals to volunteer and get involved in the movement against human trafficking and the sex slave trade.
