Your Stories

Read about Gary Fox's work with a high school club in Woodland Hills, California.

Gary, along with two friends, started Junior Organization for Youth, a high school club that helps children through volunteering and fundraising. Gary sent his"story" to us on October 24, 2002.

What kind of philanthropy did you participate in?

Gary: Along with two friends of mine, I started a high school club dedicated to helping children. Our purpose is to assist through volunteering and fundraising. The name of our club is Junior Organization for Youth (J.O.Y.).

Where did you get the idea to get involved?

Gary: We got the idea to start a club from another philanthropic organization. We decided that it would be great to start a similar club, but simply for children.

Where do you work?

Gary: We operate at our high school. We have planned and continue to plan fundraisers and volunteering events. For example, we have donated to an AIDS orphanage in South Africa. We are currently planning to help schools in India, Sri Lanka, and El Salvador through a partnership with To Love Children Educational Foundation International Inc. and with the Shantidhara Social Service India.

Do you work with anyone else?

Gary: We work with high school students at our school. We are also planning to expand to other schools, gaining more help.

What is the best thing about your experience with philanthropy?

Gary: The best thing about my experience with philanthropy is the feeling of having a true, however small, purpose in this world. I feel as though I have made at least some sort of contribution.

What was the hardest part of your project?

Gary: The hardest part of this project is preventing myself from working on it all day.  Everyday I seem to want to work on the club, no matter what else I have to do.  It is hard to restrict the time I spend on the club.

What would you say to someone else who is thinking of getting involved with some kind of philanthropy?

Gary: You should definitely pursue your thoughts. Philanthropy is extremely important. A great way to get involved, and get others involved also, is to start a chapter of our club.  If you would like more information on starting a chapter, please feel free to email me at: grfox425@aol.com.

How have you changed as a result of your experience participating in philanthropy?

Gary: Though I repeatedly heard "You have it so good," I have come to truly believe it.  I have seen the extent of what life can be like for less fortunate people around the world.
